Why Does My Car Smell Like Gas?

Feb 15, 2021

If you are smelling gas when in or around your car you are probably feeling pretty concerned. Of course, the most important thing is to determine where the smell is coming from. There are quite a few reasons why you may be smelling that gas smell, and some are far more concerning than others. So, let’s take a look at the reasons why you might be smelling gas when you are in or around your vehicle.

Refueling

You may smell gas right after you have finished refueling your car. Of course, not only is it front of mind at that moment, but you were also likely just pumping the gas. It’s not a guarantee, but the most likely thing that has happened is that a small amount of gas has made its way onto your hands or clothes or that you stepped in some gas leaked as the nozzle was rehung.

It is also possible that gas fumes from the station have built up inside the car and have left a trace smell. This is likely not anything to worry about and the smell should go away in just a few minutes.

Gas Cap

We have all had those busy and hurried days. You have a lot on your mind. You are just trying to get some gas and beat the traffic. Sometimes on these kinds of occasions, you can accidentally not replace your gas cap or fail to tighten it completely.

If this happens, you are likely to experience a gas smell as you are driving. This is an easy thing to check and fix if that is what happened. Many newer cars have special mechanisms to keep them from starting if you have not replaced the gas cap. This is a great feature, as long as you are aware of it!

Broken Spark Plugs

Spark plugs deliver the spark for combustion. Sometimes when your spark plugs are broken or loose, they can cause you to smell gas in your car. Replacing or tightening them should solve the problem.

Fuel Leak

Fuel leaks can occur in several places. There could be a leak in the fuel lines, but it is also possible that there is a leak coming from the seals of the tank or that the tank itself has been punctured. If this is the case, it will have to be fixed immediately. It is excessively dangerous to drive a car that has any kind of a fuel leak.

Fuel Pressure Regulator

When your fuel pressure regulator is not working or is not working correctly, it will cause the engine to burn too much gas and this will cause the odor of gas to permeate the surrounding area.

What to Do About a Gas Smell in Your Car
