Rainy Season Tire Maintenance and Driving Safety Tips

Rainy Season Tire Maintenance

An ideal tire maintenance schedule can vary greatly depending on many factors. A vehicle’s make and model, the environment you drive, and your driving style can impact your routine tire service intervals. Always follow your manufacturer’s recommendations as outlined in your owner’s manual. If you feel that your needs may differ from those suggestions, ask your auto technician for input. Proper tire maintenance is essential for the safety of yourself and others.

Tire Rotation

Many motorists ignore tire rotation in their general tire maintenance routines. It is unfortunate because tire rotation is one of the simplest add-ons to your oil change service. Rotating your tires regularly ensures your tires wear more evenly. It can also increase the life of your tires by preventing premature or excessive wear. Drivers who put more than 12,000 miles on their tires annually should schedule tire rotation every six months.

Tire Air Pressure

Did you know that less than 20% of drivers maintain the proper air pressure in their tires? Vehicles with the correct tire air pressure experience better traction in wet conditions. Check the air pressure at least once a month to get the most from your tires. A digital air pressure gauge is more accurate than the old-school stick-style gauge. Additionally, be sure to fill your tires to the recommended pressure found in your owner’s manual or on the sticker in the driver’s side door jam. The pressure rating located on the tire is the maximum pressure the tire is rated for, not the recommended pressure.

Tire Tread Depth

Most new, all-weather tires come equipped with 9/32” – 11/32” tread. Auto experts agree that you should replace your tires when they reach a tread depth of 2/32”. Low tire tread significantly reduces the tire’s traction and ability to divert water, increasing the chance of hydroplaning. A  tire tread depth gauge  can be picked up online or at most auto parts stores. They are easy to use and can keep you apprised of your tread depth when used regularly.

Tire Life

Numerous  studies  have shown that  tires  have a shelf life. The rubber compounds in tires degrade over time. Even if the tire still has plenty of tread, the tire’s age may require its replacement. Most auto manufacturers recommend replacing your tires every six years. In contrast, tire manufacturers say their tires can last up to 10 years. It is in your best interest to inspect your tires monthly for signs of wear and damage. Once they reach the 4-5 year mark, have your mechanic check them with every maintenance service.

Rainy Season Driving Safety Tips

Driving safely in the rain requires more diligence from the driver. Having a properly maintained vehicle is the most crucial first step. Once your automobile is in rain-ready shape, take the next step and educate yourself with these driving safety tips.

Hydroplaning

Hydroplaning occurs when your tires lose contact with the road surface due to wet conditions. While it can be an upsetting experience, it is essential to avoid panicking. Remain calm, look & steer straight ahead and gently release the gas pedal. Do not slam on the brakes. If you need to slow down, apply the brakes enough to engage the ABS (if equipped) or lightly pump the brakes if you do not have ABS. Once the traction has resumed again, continue driving at a reduced speed.
